Creating Pixel Art for Games
Software
- You can use software such as Aseprite, Photoshop, or free online tools like Piskel or Pixel-art.
Creating a New File
- Create a new small dimension file. For beginners, 16x16 is recommended.
Drawing
- Start with the basic outline of your character or object. Then, refine the shape and add main colors. Avoid using too many colors.
Shading
- Add lighting and shade for a 3D effect. Limit the shading to one or two steps darker or lighter than your base color.
Preview
- Always preview your art at 100% zoom. This ensures that it looks correct at the intended pixel resolution.
Extrapolating
- Once your base character or object is created, extrapolate to different frames for each anticipated movement. For a walking animation, this might include frames for standing, stepping with the right foot, and stepping with the left foot.
